The Target of sex toy shops, Adam & Eve, just completed a small survey of 1,000 U.S. adults that asked each respondent to give his or her first sexual experience a rating of 1 to 10.
Surprisingly (not really), of the 82 respondents who rated their devirginizing as “amazing,” 90% were men. I’m assuming their first time didn’t involve having a penis enter a small opening that tends to tighten up when nervous…
Nearly 70% of all respondents rated their experiences between “all right” and “amazing,” but I wonder what the criteria was. Are we rating the experience based on how amazing it felt? Or how amazing the whole situation/experience was?
If your first time involved candles, a quaint bed and breakfast, and a devoted boyfriend — but didn’t result in much pleasure — would you still rate it “great” because you felt loved and stuff? What if you lost it in the backseat of a Trans Am with a moderately attractive busboy from Chili’s, but managed to have an orgasm? Would you rate that “amazing”?
I also wonder what regions of the country were surveyed. Did respondents from the south answer similarly to those living in, say, San Francisco (free love!) or Farmington, N.H.,where there’s nothing to do but have sex and loiter (not necessarily in that order)?
Regardless, the result of this survey do forecast a seemingly optimistic future regarding the way people go about doing the deed for the first time. The fact that such a large majority rated their experiences in a positive manner tells us that possibly an increase in sexual awareness and education (though not sure what school districts can take credit for that) attributes to the plethora of positive ratings.
If nothing else, Americans certainly appear to be more comfortable with themselves when it comes to nakedness and naughty bits. They wouldn’t have taken the time to fill out the survey otherwise!
